Perfect Peace, Everlasting Rest
Rest not only means to be free from activity, but it also speaks of having a peace of mind or spirit. We know how to cease activity, although we do not always practice free from our labor as often as we should. But how do we attain peace of mind or spirit? What exactly is peace, and where do we find it? read more
Do Not Settle in Haran
How many of us begin a journey toward something or some place to which God has called us, but then we stop at some point along the way and settle there instead of pressing on? There can be any number of reasons for doing this: the journey becomes too difficult, the destination too obscure, we are not properly provisioned, or we simply grow weary. But whatever the reason, God wants us to continue on to where He wants us to be and not settle in a place of our own choosing. He provides encouragement, guidance, and strength in His Word to help us accomplish this. read more
The Power of Positive Reinforcement
Whether you are a supervisor who must correct one of your subordinates, an employee who is at strife with a co-worker, or an individual who feels obligated to report a certain situation to your employer, there is a way to address the issue so that you will be well-received and able to work with those involved to find a resolution. Let's explore how Apostle Paul handled one of many sticky situations he had encountered.
Paul knew the value of positive reinforcement, even when he felt it necessary to correct or rebuke a congregation. Take note how he opens his letter to the church at Philippi. One of the primary reasons for his writing was to counsel them about certain problems that were occurring in the church. He does not begin his correspondence with correction, however, but he affirms a positive attribute, commending them for their faith and support of the gospel, and offers words of encouragement that God had begun a good work among them and he will carry that work onto completion (Phil. 1:3-5). read more
Encouraged, Equipped, and Energized: Benefits of a Personal Retreat
"Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him." (Psalm 62:5)
“You just got on my last nerve.” “I wish I had some peace and quiet.” “Calgon, take me away!” If any one of these catch phrases has crossed your lips lately—or even just your mind—it may be time to take time out. If you have felt exhausted or entertained thoughts of confusion or a lack of direction, you may need to retreat from life for a day, or two, or more. Webster defines the word retreat as follows: “to draw or lead back.” If you are going through a difficult situation, are in need of direction in your life or ministry, or are simply tired and in want of some rest and relaxation, the time has come for you to draw or lead back. And I have found no better way to do that than to go on a retreat. read more
Got Goals?
I once read a Peanuts comic strip that described how some of us set goals:
Charlie Brown was practicing archery in his backyard. Instead of aiming at a target, he would shoot an arrow at a fence and then walk over and draw a target around wherever the arrow stuck. Lucy walked up and said, "Why are you doing this, Charlie Brown?" He replied, "This way I never miss!"
We sometimes shoot our dream and goal arrows all over the place. If they actually hit something, we explain to ourselves and possibly others that that was our target all along. In reality, however, there had been little planning or strategy behind our efforts and we had not actually aimed at any specific target. read more
How to Assess Your Relationship
Ah, the joys of a new relationship. The two of you are such a cute couple! Everything the other person does is fun, exciting, or simply adorable . . . for at least the first month or two. Then reality enters the relationship as the weeks and months go by, and some of those things that were cute in the beginning have somehow become annoying. In addition, as things turn more serious, the focus is also redirected to more important matters than just having fun. Subjects such as core values and beliefs come into play. Other topics, like conflict resolution and compromise move to the forefront as well. Emotional security, responsibility, religious beliefs, and even habits also become considerations. read more
